Arusha is blessed with a mild climate for much of the year, but the dry season brings long, hot afternoons that can be hard on our dogs. Unlike us, dogs cannot sweat to cool down – they rely mostly on panting, which is far less efficient. A little planning goes a long way in keeping your best friend safe and comfortable.
Always keep fresh water available
This sounds obvious, but on a hot day a water bowl can empty or grow warm quickly. Check it several times a day, top it up, and keep it in the shade. If your dog spends time outside, place a second bowl in a different spot so there is always one within reach.
Walk early or late, never at midday
The hours around noon are the hottest, and tarmac and dirt can burn a dog’s paw pads. Aim for walks in the early morning or after the sun has dropped in the evening. A quick test: press the back of your hand to the ground for seven seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for their paws.
Provide proper shade
A dog left in direct sun will overheat fast. Make sure there is a cool, shaded place to rest at all times – under a tree, on a veranda, or indoors on a cool floor. Never leave a dog in a parked car, even with the windows cracked. The temperature inside rises dangerously within minutes.
Know the warning signs of overheating
Heavy, frantic panting, drooling, weakness, stumbling, or bright red gums can all signal that a dog is dangerously hot. If you see these, move your dog to shade immediately, offer small amounts of water, and wet their body with cool, not ice cold, water. Seek veterinary help if they do not recover quickly.
A cool dog is a happy, healthy dog. With a few small habits, Arusha’s dry season can be just as enjoyable for your pet as it is for you.
